Exotic Super Foods - #1 Adzuki Beans

As a fitness competitor and a health fanatic I am always searching for ways to get in as much good nutrition as possible. My latest off season has found me exploring the big world of super foods. Particularly exotic ones, being an pacific islander myself, I tend to veer away from traditional western foods, maybe it is because it reminds me of my roots, regardless the reasoning, these super foods are not only SUPER beneficial, but tasty too! A great change from the everyday chicken and rice pre-show diet. Below is super food #1 ( they are not in any particular order), check back in next week for #2!

Adzuki Beans

Adzuki beans are a good source of magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc copper, manganese and B vitamins. As a high-potassium, low-sodium food they can help reduce blood pressure and act as a natural diuretic. When combined with grains, beans supply high quality protein, which provides a healthy alternative to meat or other animal protein.

Like most beans, adzuki beans are rich in soluble fiber. This type of fiber provides bulk to the stool and binds to toxins and cholesterol aiding in their elimination from the body.

In Japan adzuki beans are known for their healing properties and are used to support kidney and bladder function.

Definately worth trying out, I have tried them in pancake form and they are absolutely amazing!

Healthy Eating! :)
